You know the feeling. You see something wrong and think someone should do something about that. Olivier Nsengimana saw cranes disappearing from the wild while people kept them as garden pets. He decided he was the someone. In 2012 there were 300 grey crowned cranes left in Rwanda. Today there are 1,293. Dian Fossey felt the same thing in 1967 and set up two tents in the Virunga forest when there were 250 mountain gorillas left. Today there are over 1,000. Your first morning in Rwanda you meet the cranes. On Day 4 you meet the gorillas. Both are here because one person decided to act.

This is not a standard gorilla day trip from Kigali. It is a four-day journey through three of Rwanda's national parks, built for the traveller who wants more than a permit and a photograph. You start in the city, spend two nights deep inside Akagera where most visitors never sleep, and end face to face with the mountain gorillas in the forest where Rwanda chose to save them.

The two nights in Akagera are the heart of it. By the time you reach Karenge Bush Camp on the northern plains, you have driven the full length of the park, watched the landscape shift from wetlands to open savannah, and earned the dawn game drive where the predators are still out. From there the road leads west to the Virunga Mountains. Day 4 is why you came.

Two nights in Akagera secures your low season gorilla permit. Travel November to May and save $450 per person. The mountain gorillas do not care either way.

Itinerary

Day 1 — Kigali to Akagera via Nyandungu & Umusambi

Your first stop is Nyandungu Eco-Park, a restored wetland on the edge of Kigali where walking paths wind through medicinal gardens and birdlife fills the reeds. From there you continue to Umusambi Village where you walk among the cranes, hear their story, and have lunch in the open air before heading east.

You arrive at Akagera in the afternoon, check in at Akagera Game Lodge, and head out for a sunset boat safari on Lake Ihema. Hippos surface at dusk. Crocodiles line the banks. The birds come in to roost. It's a quiet, unhurried start and the park is already telling you what it has become.

Overnight: Akagera Game Lodge

Day 2 — South to North: The Full Day Drive

This is the day the park reveals itself. You set off early and drive the full length of Akagera through five different landscapes. The south is water and shrubland. Giraffes at the roadside, buffalo on the hills, elephants in the valleys. The vegetation is dense here and the animals appear and disappear.

The northern plains are something else entirely, open savannah, unobstructed views, and the best leopard country in the park. Leopards are rarely seen anywhere in Africa. In Akagera's north they give themselves away if you know where to look and your guide does. The night game drive after dark is your best chance. Leopards hunt at night and the Kilala Plains are their ground.

You arrive at Karenge Bush Camp by late afternoon. Lunch is at camp with the savannah stretching out in every direction. As the light drops you head out on the night game drive. This is the one.

Overnight: Karenge Bush Camp

Day 3 — Dawn on the Kilala Plains, then West to the Virunga Mountains

You're up before the sun. The northern plains in the early morning are as good as it gets in Akagera. Hyena sightings are rare here not because they hide but because the population is small. Dawn is when they're most active and your guide knows this ground.

Back at camp for a late breakfast, then you begin the drive west. Akagera falls behind you. The landscape changes as you cross Rwanda, the hills steeper, the air cooler, the horizon opening up. By evening the Virunga Mountains are visible. You check in at Mount Gorilla View Lodge at the base of the volcanoes, have dinner, and rest. Tomorrow is why you came.

Overnight: Mount Gorilla View Lodge

Day 4 — Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Nothing prepares you for it. Volcanoes National Park sits in a world of its own, volcanoes rising out of mist, the air cooler and quieter than anywhere you've been on this trip. You feel it before you even enter the forest.

You arrive at park headquarters in Kinigi early. There's tea and coffee, traditional dancing, and a briefing from the park rangers who confirm your permits and assign your trekking group. Then the forest begins.

The trek can take one hour or four depending on where the gorilla family has moved. Your guide reads the forest through broken branches, fresh prints and the smell of vegetation, then leads you in. When you find them there is nothing else. A silverback at rest. A mother with an infant. Animals that Rwanda spent thirty years protecting, living exactly as they should.

You have one hour with them. It goes quickly. After the trek you have lunch, then visit the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund Museum — the story behind the woman who started it all, told at the foot of the mountain where she lived and worked. Then the drive back to Kigali.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about this trip? We’ve got answers.

  • Can I secure my booking with a deposit?

Yes. A 50% deposit confirms your spot. The remaining balance can be settled by credit card, bank transfer, or cash on arrival. We're flexible on how you pay and split billing is available if you're travelling with others.

  • What happens if I need to cancel?

Our standard booking is non-refundable. If you want full protection, select our Enhanced Refund Terms at checkout — an additional 8% — and you're covered for a full refund regardless of when you cancel. We're the only safari operator in Rwanda that offers refunds on gorilla permits. No one else does.

  • How hard is the gorilla trek?

Most treks are moderate. The time it takes to find the gorillas varies — it can be one hour or four depending on where the family has moved that day. Porters are available to carry your gear and support you on the trail. For elderly visitors or those with limited mobility we assign a gorilla family that is closer to the starting point. If this applies to you let us know at the time of booking and we'll make the right arrangements.

  • I have a knee injury — can I still trek?

Yes. Volcanoes National Park assigns gorilla families based on fitness and mobility. If you have a knee injury or any physical limitation let us know at the time of booking and you'll be assigned a family that is closer to the starting point. Porters are also available for hire on the day to carry your gear or assist you on the trail. The park does everything possible to make sure everyone who wants to see the gorillas gets to see them.

  • Where will I be sleeping?

Night 1 is at Akagera Game Lodge, night 2 at Karenge Bush Camp, and night 3 at Mount Gorilla View Lodge. The tour is private — if you're travelling as two you share a room between you, not with other guests. All meals are included throughout. If you'd prefer your own room that's available on request for an additional fee.

  • Can you pick us up and drop us off at the airport?

Yes. Airport pickup and drop-off are included in the price. Let us know your flight details at the time of booking and we'll take care of the rest.

  • Is this a private or group tour?

This is a private tour from start to finish. Your vehicle, your guide, your itinerary. You won't share any part of the experience with people you didn't come with.

  • What vehicle will we use?

All game drives are in a private open roof safari vehicle. Standing up through the roof gives you a 360 degree view across the plains — essential for spotting wildlife and for photography. The vehicle has a fridge so you can bring your own drinks and snacks for the drive.

  • Is there a minimum age for the gorilla trek?

Yes. The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years. This is a park rule set by the Rwanda Development Board and applies without exception. Children under 15 are welcome on the Akagera portion of the tour.

    What meals are included?

  • What meals are included?

All meals are included throughout the four days. Accommodation at Akagera Game Lodge and Mount Gorilla View Lodge is on a full board basis. At Karenge Bush Camp dinner and breakfast are included. Lunch on Day 2 and Day 3 is at Karenge Bush Camp. Lunch on Day 4 is after the gorilla trek before the drive back to Kigali.

  • What if it rains during the trek?

Trekking happens rain or shine. The forest is beautiful in the rain and the gorillas don't stop for weather. Wear waterproof boots and bring a rain jacket — your pre-departure guide covers exactly what to pack. Permits are not refunded for weather.

  • What should I wear and bring on the day?

Long trousers and long sleeves to protect against nettles and insects. Waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support. A rain jacket, sun hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water. Gloves are useful. Your full packing list is in your pre-departure guide. Leave the bright colours at the lodge.

  • Will I definitely see the gorillas?

Yes. Rwanda has a 100% gorilla sighting success rate. The families are fully habituated and monitored daily by park rangers. You will find them. The only variable is how long the trek takes to reach them.

    Is Rwanda safe to visit?

  • Is Rwanda safe to visit?

Rwanda is consistently rated one of the safest countries in Africa. Kigali is clean, organised and welcoming. The parks are well managed and professionally staffed. Your private guide is with you for all four days. Thousands of visitors trek the gorillas every year without incident.

  • Do I need a visa?

Most nationalities can get a visa on arrival or apply online in advance through the Rwanda e-visa portal. East African Community citizens don't need a visa. Check the official Rwanda immigration website for your specific nationality before travelling.

What is the best time of year to visit?

The gorillas are there year round. The dry seasons from June to September and December to February offer easier trekking conditions. November to May is low season — quieter, greener, and if you travel with us your gorilla permit drops from $1,500 to $1,050. A saving of $450 per person.

  • Can I combine this tour with other destinations?

Yes. The most popular extension is Lake Kivu — two hours from Volcanoes National Park and a natural fifth day before flying home. Add a Kigali city tour on arrival and you have a full six days covering everything Rwanda has to offer. Beyond Rwanda we work with trusted partners across East Africa and can build the right itinerary around your dates whether that's chimpanzee trekking in Uganda or continuing to the Serengeti.
