Arrive at the southern entrance for ranger briefings and your first views of the savannah grasslands ahead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Questions, Answered

  • What wildlife will I see on the safari?

Akagera is home to the Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino — and you have over a 90% chance of spotting all of them on a two-day safari. You'll also encounter giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, and a wide range of antelope. With over 500 bird species in the park, birdwatchers are especially well-catered for.

  • What will I see on the sunset boat safari?

The boat ride on Lake Ihema is a birder's paradise — expect migratory birds of all kinds, including rare species such as the shoebill stork, ibis, and malachite kingfisher. You'll also see hippos and crocodiles along the water's edge, and if you're lucky, elephants that have come down for a dip. On a beautiful day, the sunset view over Lake Ihema is simply stunning.

  • What animals will I spot on the night safari?

The night safari opens up a completely different side of Akagera. You'll venture out with a spotlight to find nocturnal species: leopards out on a hunt, hyenas, civets, serval cats, bush babies, genets, porcupines, and duikers. The leopard is the star attraction — elusive by day, but the night drive significantly increases your chances of a sighting.

Activities & Options

  • Which is better — the sunset boat ride or the night safari?

They offer very different experiences. The sunset boat ride is the perfect way to end your first day in the park — relaxing, scenic, and rich in birdlife. The night safari is more of an adventure, heading into the darkness in search of nocturnal predators. If you love birds and scenery, choose the boat. If spotting the leopard is your priority, go for the night safari.

  • Can I do both the sunset boat ride and the night safari?

Not on the same evening — the timing overlaps. The sunset boat ride runs 16:30–17:30, and the night safari departs at 17:30. However, you can do the night safari on Day 1 and opt for a morning boat ride on Day 2. Only one is included in the 2-day package.

  • What time does the sunset boat ride start and end?

It departs at 16:30 and returns at 17:30 — perfectly timed to get you back to your accommodation before the park closes at 18:00.

  • When does the night safari start?

The night safari departs at 17:30 and lasts approximately two hours. You'll be dropped back at your lodge by 20:00, just in time for dinner.

  • What is a hot air balloon ride like, and how much does it cost?

Balloon rides launch at 06:00. Since you're high above the park, you'll mostly spot animals that move in large open groups — giraffes, buffalo, and elephants. The real highlight is the breathtaking panoramic view of Akagera's rolling hills. Cost is $400 per person, or $300 per person for groups of two or more, including a champagne breakfast and a bush breakfast after your flight.

Timing & Logistics

  • Is it mandatory to start the game drive at 07:00?

Not at all — we actually encourage an earlier start if you can manage it. We recommend 07:00 as an ideal time for a two-day itinerary. The later you start, the less you make of Day 1. The latest pick-up for a two-day safari is 14:00, as the park closes at 18:00.

  • Why choose a two-day safari over one day?

A two-day safari lets you slow down and get the most out of Akagera. You don't need a 05:30 start — 07:00 is perfectly relaxed. Spending the night in the park is the only way to access the sunset boat ride and night safari. You also start fresh on Day 2 when the park is cool and animals are most active. As the day warms up, animals tend to move away from the roads.

Boats, Vehicles & Guides

  • Is the boat ride private?

No, the boat ride is shared. We operate two boats — one with a capacity of up to 10 guests and another for up to 16. Which boat is used depends on the number of bookings on the day.

  • What type of vehicles do you use?

We use Land Cruiser 79 Series vehicles with custom-made pop-up roofs. Unlike the fully open vehicles found in some other African parks, the enclosed design is preferred in Rwanda — it lets you get closer to wildlife while staying safe, and is far more practical when it rains.

  • What languages do your guides speak?

Our guides primarily speak English. French-speaking guides are also available — please let us know at the time of booking.

Families & Children

  • Is there an age limit for the 2-day safari?

There is no age limit. The Akagera Game Lodge has no age restrictions set.

  • How much do children pay?

Children under 5 are free. Ages 5–11 pay 50% of the adult rate. Ages 12 and above pay the full rate. Children under 12 must share a room with their parents — cots and mattresses are available at no extra charge.

  • Can an infant travel on this safari?

Absolutely. We adjust the itinerary to make sure it's not too tiring, and we always plan stops for diaper changes and feeding. Just let us know when booking.

Accommodation

  • What are the sleeping arrangements?

The package is priced for two people sharing a double room. Additional guests can be accommodated in a single room. If you'd prefer separate rooms, mention it at checkout and we'll arrange it for an extra fee.
