Akagera’s Landmark Lodge
Long before luxury tented camps and eco-hideaways arrived in the park, there was Akagera Game Lodge. Built high on a ridge in the late 1970s, it was the first place travelers could sleep inside Akagera — and for many Rwandans, their very first safari memory was waking here to mist rising off Lake Ihema.
Through the park’s ups and downs, the lodge stood as a constant landmark, its pool and wide balconies looking out over the savannah. Families came here for holidays, conferences were held in its halls, and generations of visitors began their Akagera journey on this very ridge.
