1 Day Akagera National Park Safari From Kigali
With just 7 hours in the park, you want every minute to count
1 Day Akagera National Park. Most one-day safaris waste time and miss the wildlife. Ours doesn’t.
With only 1 day in Akagera National Park, every minute counts. Our trackers use real-time sightings to position you where the animals are, not where they were an hour ago.

Safari Details
One day through Rwanda's rolling hills and wild savannah. These lions should not exist. All were dead by 1999. Now you can get close enough to leave your binoculars in the bag.
The safari winds through different terrain. Tall grass where lions hunt, dusty plains with elephant herds, and lakes where hippo pods lounge near crocodiles. Over 500 bird species live here, including the rare shoebill stork. Your midday break at Lake Malihidi looks across to Tanzania.

This isn't just a safari. It's proof that conservation works when communities benefit. The whole park, the whole story, in one day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Your Questions, Answered
What are my chances of seeing the Big Five in 1 day?
Wildlife doesn't run on a schedule, but you have the best shot at sighting the BIG 5 with us. This is all we do. We maintain a large fleet of safari cars in the park at all times, connected through our proprietary live-sightings network. Our guides receive real-time updates on animal locations throughout the day. We also have current meteorological data from Tanzania and Rwanda. Akagera sits right at the border. Weather patterns affect animal behavior. Most private safaris see 4 of the 5 species. The leopard is the most elusive because it is primarily nocturnal.
Will I see hippos and crocodiles?
Yes. Lake Ihema and Lake Mihindi reliably deliver both and are the closest to guaranteed sightings in Akagera.
Will I see the Shoebill Stork?
The Shoebill is a rare bird, not extinct but critically endangered. You might spot it by chance, but sightings are rare. Birders interested in tracking the Shoebill or other rare birds should book a 2-day or longer safari with a specialist birding guide who can dedicate time to finding their target bird.
How close will we be to the animals? Should I bring binoculars?
We provide binoculars to include you in the tracking experience. You'll notice our guides rely on other signs and their trained eyes to locate wildlife. We consider a "sighting" when your safari car is parked 3-20 meters from the animal. Sometimes they come even closer. You remain completely safe inside the vehicle.
Is the Akagera safari worth it compared to other African parks?
It's true that Akagera doesn't have the massive wildebeest migration of the Serengeti or the huge elephant herds of Kruger. Still, what Akagera lacks in numbers, it makes up for with its diversity and the richness of the experience. Where else can you see the Big Five, watch hippos and crocodiles from the water, and spot over 500 bird species, all in one visit?
What sets Akagera apart is its ethical approach to safari. Instead of the crowds and convoys of vehicles found in many parks, where animals barely glance at passing traffic, here you often have wildlife sightings all to yourself. It feels more respectful to the animals and gives you the rare sensation of exploring wild, untouched Africa on your own terms.
Safety & Emergency
Is it safe to get so close to wild animals?
Absolutely. The safari vehicle is designed to keep you safe while allowing close proximity to wildlife. You stay inside during all encounters, typically parking 3-20 meters from animals, though sometimes they come closer.
What happens in case of a medical emergency?
Every tour is covered by Akagera Air Emergency Evacuation. For serious emergencies, we call a helicopter for immediate evacuation. For less urgent medical issues, we stop at hospitals and clinics along the route and continue only after you have been properly attended to. This comprehensive emergency coverage is included in your safari price.
What condition are your vehicles in?
We keep our safari cars in excellent condition. Before every trip, each vehicle gets a full inspection. These are not ordinary SUVs. They are specially built for safaris in Akagera, so you can count on a safe and comfortable ride.
I have back problems. Can I still go on safari?
The standard safari vehicles are rugged and designed to handle off-road conditions. For visitors with serious back problems, we recommend our luxury SUV option. It has superior shock absorbers and comfortable seats that absorb impact while still handling the terrain.
I have an infant. Isn't a full-day safari too demanding?
This is one of the main reasons to book a private safari. It goes at your pace. Many parents have successfully brought infants, and it has been manageable. For kids over age three, it is a real treat. They doze when tired and wake up excited each time the vehicle stops for an animal sighting.
What makes Akagera special is its thoughtful, low-impact approach to safaris. You won't find crowds or lines of vehicles here. It is just you, the open landscape, and animals behaving naturally, undisturbed by constant traffic. It feels more respectful to the wildlife, and there is something magical about having those encounters all to yourself. It is as close as you can get to experiencing wild Africa in private.
What's Included in the Costs
Is lunch included? Do you have vegetarian options?
Lunch is included in your safari price, and we offer vegetarian options. You will enjoy your meal at the Lake Mihindi picnic area, right on the border with Tanzania and overlooking beautiful scenery. Soft drinks and water are also provided.
Do children pay the same price as adults?
No, children between 6 and 12 years old pay 80% of the adult fare. Children who are 5 years old or younger can travel for free.
Paying $500 for just one person seems a little high.
Regrettably, for a single participant, the full cost must be borne individually, including the vehicle, guide, tracker, park fees, and all logistical arrangements, regardless of group size. However, the per-person rate decreases significantly with additional participants: groups of 2-3 pay $300 per person, and groups of 4-7 pay $250 per person.
When is the recommended time to book?
We operate a fleet of eight safari vehicles. Early booking is recommended. Bookings made more than three months in advance qualify for a 5% early booking discount.
Is full payment required at the time of booking?
No, you may reserve your safari with a 10% deposit and pay the remaining balance upon arrival.
What currencies and payment methods do you accept?
We accept all currencies if you pay online or by credit card. Our payment system accepts mobile wallets, both local and international. We also accept cash payments at any of our tourism information centers.
What's your cancellation policy?
You receive a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before the safari. No refund for cancellations within 24 hours of pickup.
For added flexibility, you can select enhanced refund terms through Protect Group for an extra 8% of your booking. This offers a full refund in case of any emergency and can be requested from the day of travel up to 6 months later.
Timing & Logistics
What time does the safari start and end?
Pickup is at 5:00 AM from any location in Kigali or the Eastern Province. Return is typically between 6:00 and 7:00 PM, but we can adjust this to accommodate your flight schedule or other commitments.
How far is Akagera from Kigali?
The park is about 110 kilometers from Kigali, a 2.5 to 3-hour drive. The trip includes a stop at Imigongo Art Center, roughly halfway, where you can stretch and grab coffee.
Can I do the safari and still catch my evening flight from Kigali?
Yes. Most international flights require check-in by 19:00, and we are usually back in Kigali by then. If needed, we can return as early as 17:00 without compromising your experience. We choose a packed lunch instead of a picnic, skip the coffee stop, and adjust the route accordingly.
Are there restrooms during the safari?
Yes. There is a restroom about every 2 hours of driving. They are located at the coffee stop, park entrance, lunch picnic site, and park exit.
What's the best season to visit?
There is no wrong time. Each season has advantages, and we operate year-round with excellent sightings.
Do you still operate safaris when it rains?
Yes. Come rain or shine. Wildlife doesn't follow a schedule. Animals may seek shade during heavy rain. Rwanda is not known for prolonged downpours, especially in the savannah grasslands of Akagera, one of the driest regions bordering Tanzania. Our vehicles have pop-up roofs that close during rain.
Should I add the boat safari to my 1-day safari?
Many operators offer this and we have the option at checkout, but we generally advise against it unless you have a special interest and visit during the dry season (June-September). Weather is unpredictable and can affect boat departures.
The main reason we suggest not adding a boat ride to a 1-day safari is that it takes time away from wildlife tracking on land. With just one day, a boat ride is not the best choice. It’s a better fit for safaris that last two days or more, when you have extra time.
Packing & Preparation
Packing & Preparation
Mornings are usually cold, but it can get hot by midday. Wear warm layers with lighter clothes underneath. Khaki pants and shorts in beige, olive green, and brown are best for safari. Avoid dark colors as they attract insects and may disturb wildlife like buffalo or rhinos.
Are there bugs in the park? Should I bring bug spray?
Yes, there are insects in the park, but Akagera uses ecologically approved methods to draw them away from game drive routes. We provide bug spray, but it is best to bring your own that your skin is used to.
What languages do your guides speak besides English?
Akagera Safari provides English and French-speaking guides and trackers. They also speak Kinyarwanda, the local language, and some Swahili. We have one German-speaking guide and hope to expand language options in the future.
