1 Day Akagera Safari From Kigali
With just 7 hours in the park, you want every minute to count
Most one-day safaris waste time and miss the wildlife. Ours doesn’t.
Our trackers use real-time sightings to position you where the animals are, not where they were an hour ago.

Safari Details
One day through Rwanda's rolling hills and wild savannah. These lions shouldn't exist. Every one was dead by 1999. Now you'll get close enough to leave your binoculars in the bag.
The safari winds through different terrain—tall grass where lions hunt, dusty plains with elephant herds, lakes where hippo pods lounge near crocodiles. Over 500 bird species including the rare shoebill stork. Your midday break at Lake Malihidi looks across to Tanzania.

This isn't just a safari. It's proof that conservation works when communities benefit. The whole park, the whole story, in one day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Your Questions, Answered
What are my chances of seeing the Big Five?
Wildlife doesn't run on a schedule, but your chances are significantly higher with us. This is all we do. We maintain a large fleet of safari cars in the park at any given time, all connected through our proprietary live sightings network. Our guides receive real-time updates on animal locations throughout the day. We also have up-to-date meteorological data from both Tanzania and Rwanda—Akagera sits right at the border, and weather patterns affect animal behavior. Most private safaris see 4 of the 5, with the leopard being most elusive as it's primarily nocturnal.
Will I see hippos and crocodiles?
Yes. Lake Ihema and Lake Mihindi reliably deliver both. These are the closest thing to guaranteed sightings in Akagera.
Will I see the Shoebill Stork?
The Shoebill is an extremely rare bird, not extinct but critically endangered. You might spot it by chance, but sightings are very rare. Birders specifically interested in tracking the Shoebill or other rare birds should book a 2-day or longer safari that includes a specialist birding guide who can dedicate time to tracking your bird of interest.
How close do we get to animals? Do I need binoculars?
We provide binoculars, mainly to include you in the tracking experience. You'll notice our guides rely on other signs and their trained eyes to locate wildlife. What we consider a "sighting" is your safari car parked 3-20 meters from the animal. Sometimes they come even closer—you remain completely safe inside the vehicle.
Is Akagera safari worth it compared to other African parks?
Absolutely. Akagera will never compete with Serengeti's wildebeest herds or Kruger's elephant populations. But what it lacks in numbers, it makes up in variety and experience quality. Very few parks in Africa offer the Big Five plus extensive waterborne wildlife and 500+ bird species in a single visit.
Where Akagera truly shines is the ethical safari experience. This isn't a crowded park where animals are habituated to roads and cornered by dozens of vehicles. You're rarely parked next to another car during wildlife encounters, which makes it not only more ethical but gives you a genuine sense of a private, wild Africa experience.
Safety & Emergency
Is it safe to get so close to wild animals?
Absolutely. The safari vehicle is specifically designed to keep you safe while allowing incredible proximity to wildlife. You remain inside the vehicle during all wildlife encounters, typically parking 3-20 meters from animals—though sometimes they come even closer to you.
What happens in case of a medical emergency?
Every tour is covered by Akagera Air Emergency Evacuation. For serious emergencies, we call in the helicopter for immediate evacuation. For less urgent medical issues, we stop at hospitals and clinics along the route and only continue after you've been properly attended to. This comprehensive emergency coverage is included in your safari price.
What condition are your vehicles in?
Our safari cars are maintained to the highest standards. Each vehicle undergoes a thorough inspection before every safari—no exceptions. These aren't regular SUVs; they're purpose-built safari vehicles designed to handle Akagera's terrain while keeping you comfortable and safe.
I have back problems. Can I still go on safari?
The standard safari vehicles are rugged by design to handle off-road conditions. For visitors with serious back conditions, we recommend our luxury SUV option, which features superior shock absorbers and comfortable seats that better absorb impact while still handling the terrain.
I have an infant. Isn't a full-day safari too demanding?
This is one of the main reasons to book a private safari—it goes at your pace. Many parents have successfully brought infants, and it's been very manageable. For kids above age three, it's a real treat. They doze when tired and wake up excited every time the vehicle stops for an animal sighting.

What's Included in the Costs
Is lunch included? Do you have vegetarian options?
Yes, lunch is included in the cost with vegetarian options available. Lunch is served at Lake Mihindi picnic area right at the border with Tanzania, overlooking its landscape. We serve lunch with soft drinks and water, all included in your safari price.
Do children pay the same price as adults?
No. Children aged 6-12 pay 80% of the adult price. Children aged 5 and below go free.
$500 for one person seems expensive.
Unfortunately, for one person without compromising the experience, this is the cost that must be absorbed alone—it covers the vehicle, guide, tracker, park fees, and all logistics regardless of group size. The price per person drops significantly with group size: 2-3 people pay $300 per person, 4-7 people pay $250 per person.
When should I book?
We operate a fleet of 8 safari cars. The earlier you book, the better. For bookings made 3+ months in advance, you receive a 5% early booking discount.
Do I have to pay the full amount to book?
No. You can reserve your safari with just 10% down and pay the rest on arrival.
What currencies and payment methods do you accept?
We accept all currencies if you pay online or by credit card. Our payment system accepts mobile wallets, both local and international. We also accept cash payments at any of our tourism information centers.
What's your cancellation policy?
You receive a full refund if you cancel up to 24 hours before the safari. No refund for cancellations less than 24 hours before pickup.
For added flexibility, you can select enhanced refund terms through Protect Group for an additional 8% of your booking. This provides a full refund in case of any emergency and can be requested from the day of travel up to 6 months later.
Timing & Logistics
What time does the safari start and end?
Pickup is at 5:00 AM from anywhere in Kigali or the Eastern Province. We typically return between 6:00-7:00 PM, though this can be adjusted based on your flight schedule or other commitments.
How far is Akagera from Kigali?
The park is approximately 110 kilometers from Kigali, about a 2.5-3 hour drive. This includes a stopover at Imigongo Art Center, roughly halfway to the park, where you can stretch and grab coffee.
Can I do the safari and still catch my evening flight from Kigali?
Yes. Most international flights require check-in by 19:00, and we're typically back in Kigali by that time. If needed, we can return as early as 17:00 without compromising your experience—we opt for a packed lunch instead of a picnic lunch, skip the coffee stopover, and adjust the route accordingly.
Are there restrooms during the safari?
Yes. There's a restroom approximately every 2 hours of driving. You'll find them at the coffee stop, park entrance, lunch picnic site, and park exit.
What's the best season to visit?
There's no wrong time. Each season has advantages, and we operate year-round with excellent sightings throughout.
Do you still operate safaris when it rains?
Yes. Come rain, come shine. Wildlife doesn't run on a schedule. While animals may seek shade during heavy rain, Rwanda isn't known for prolonged downpours—especially not in the savannah grasslands of Akagera, which is one of Rwanda's driest regions bordering Tanzania. Our vehicles have pop-up roofs that close during rain.
Should I add the boat safari to my 1-day safari?
While many operators offer this and we have the option at checkout, we generally advise against it unless you have a special interest and you're visiting during the dry season (June-September). Weather is unpredictable nowadays, which can affect boat departures.
The real reason we discourage combining a 1-day safari with a boat ride: it takes away valuable time we could use tracking wildlife on land. With only one day to spend, a boat ride isn't ideal. It works best for 2+ day safaris when you have more time.
Packing & Preparation
Packing & Preparation
What clothes should I wear?
Mornings are usually cold, but it can get very hot by midday. Wear warm layers with lighter clothes underneath. Khaki pants and shorts, beige, olive green, and brown are best for safari. Avoid bright colors—they attract insects and may disturb wildlife like buffalo or rhinos.
Are there bugs in the park? Should I pack bug spray?
Yes, there are insects in the park, but Akagera uses ecologically approved methods to attract them away from game drive routes. We provide bug spray, but it's best if you bring your own that your skin is accustomed to.
What languages do your guides speak besides English?
Akagera Safari provides both English and French-speaking guides and trackers. They also speak Kinyarwanda (the local language) and some Swahili. We currently have one German-speaking guide and hope to expand language options in the future.
