Camping at Akagera

Camping in Akagera National Park is your front-row ticket to Rwanda’s wild heart—no barriers, just you and the landscape. Whether you choose Shakani beside the gentle shores of Lake Shakani, Muyumbu atop a ridge with sunrise views over Lake Ihema, the remote Mutumba Hills, or Mihindi with its quirky café and picnic vibe near Lake Mihindi, each spot offers its own take on the wilderness.

Nights are marked by hippos and bird calls, mornings by open savannah views—and all of it as close to raw Akagera as you can get.

Where to Camp in Akagera National Park

Shakani Campsite (South)

Set right on the edge of Lake Shakani, this campsite offers lakeside views, solar-heated showers, and flushing toilets. At night, expect the soundtrack of hippos carrying across the water.

Muyumbu Campsite (South)

Positioned high on a ridge, Muyumbu looks out over Lake Ihema and into Tanzania. It’s known for its sense of seclusion and for sunrises that spill golden light across the horizon.

Mutumba Campsite (Central–North)

Tucked in the Mutumba Hills, this is the most remote of Akagera’s campsites. The cooler highland air and nearby wildlife make it a favorite for those who want a wilder, off-the-beaten-path feel.

Mihindi Campsite & Café (North)

Located close to Lake Mihindi, this newer campsite adds a social touch with its small café and picnic area. It’s a relaxed stopover, perfect for breaking up a camping safari with a more casual vibe.
