Akagera National Park Prices
Akagera National Park prices depend on four things: your nationality, country of residence, age, and how long you plan to stay.
International visitors pay $100 per adult and $50 per child. African visitors from outside the East African Community pay $50 per adult and $25 per child. EAC residents pay $50 per adult and $30 per child. Rwandan and EAC citizens pay RWF 15,000 — around $16.
Visitors sleeping inside the park are charged per night, not per day. The fee reduces by 50% on the second and third nights. From night four onwards, entry is free for stays of up to one week.
Visitors staying outside the park pay the full entrance fee every time they enter. The exception is guests staying at select partner lodges outside the park, including Akagera Safari Camp and Rhino Lodge who pay 50% on all subsequent entries.
Most people who book hotels outside the park do so to save money on accommodation, but the daily entrance fees can make it more expensive overall. Ask your accommodation what contract they have with the park before booking.
The park is cashless. Payment is by MTN Mobile Money, bank transfer, or credit card (Visa or Mastercard).
Children 5 and under enter free regardless of their nationality. Children 6 to 12 pay half the adult rate, and children 13 and above pay the full adult rates.
Park Entry Fees
The entry fee covers self-drive game viewing and is charged per person per day — or per night for visitors sleeping inside the park. There is a meaningful discount built in for longer stays: the fee reduces by 50% on the second and third nights, and nights beyond the third are free for stays of up to one week.
Boat Trips & Night Safari Fees
The boat runs four scheduled trips daily. The early morning trip is the best for birdlife. The 09:00 is the right trip for day visitors from Kigali because it finishes at 10:00 leaving the rest of the day for the northern plains. The afternoon trip is not recommended for day visitors as it cuts out the north circuit safari game drive entirely.
The sunset trip is for overnight guests only.
The night game drive runs in the south and at Karenge Bush Camp in the north. The north gives you the best chance of lions on the Kilala Plains after dark. The south gives you the best chance of spotting the leopard.
Guide Fees
You do not need a guide to self-drive Akagera — but hiring one changes the experience significantly. Park and community freelance guides know where the lions denned last week. They know which section of Lake Ihema holds the largest hippo pod. That knowledge is worth $40 for a full day.
| Guide Service | Fee (USD) |
|---|---|
| Self-drive guide half day | 25 |
| Self-drive guide full day | 40 |
Timing rule: Guides collected before 9am and returned within 5 hours are charged at the half-day rate. Guides collected after 9am are charged the full day unless returned before midday. Guides collected after midday are charged half day. If your route exits through the north gate, the full-day rate applies regardless of time — you will need to drop the guide at Kayonza for their return transport.
Camping Fees
Akagera has camping in the south of the park and the premium Mihindi Campsite, which includes breakfast.
